had mixed feelings about Serafina’s horny little guardian friend. Even I knew the rules about what he did, and I wasn’t Fae. But he at least came through when it counted. Jasmine was a nuisance that was easily taken care of. Serafina could have killed her at least twice now but spared her because we needed her alive for the time being. I knew that had an expiration date.

I was more worried about this Doctor Graves, and I had my own special form of punishment when I found him. I had every intention of knocking him out and bringing him to my castle in Hell. Every piece of real estate in Hell worth its salt had a very good torture dungeon downstairs. Sometimes, you needed to punish a misbehaving demon, and sometimes, you just wanted to play with your lover. A torture dungeon was versatile, and every house needed one. Fuck, one of the main reasons I was in Scorchwood was because topside didn’t understand that.

The guardian came through with information I never would have guessed. I knew Magnus Rathmore. They sentenced him long after all of us were. Scorchwood had its murderers, rapists, thieves, and deviants of all kinds. You could take a shiv to the gut over something simple like socks. You couldn’t trust a damned soul except for your adopted prison family.

But one thing all the criminals in Scorchwood could agree on, no matter what the crime, was that no one liked people that hurt kids. If you got sent down here for hurting kids, it would start with frequent beatings. Once everyone got tired of beating you, they would draw names over who got the honor of gutting you.

The guards didn’t seem to care except with Magnus Rathmore. He was a particularly nasty piece of work who experimented on many children. He’d hit just about every supernatural species except demons and even went after the human children. He didn’t hurt my kind, but I still joined in for a beating because I hated men like him. A physician was supposed to be someone you could trust, and he perverted that to hurt people who couldn’t fight back. I had absolutely no problem repeatedly kicking him while he was down.

Based on prison history, we should have gotten a few more beatings in before someone got the honor of sticking a shiv in his gut, but the guards swooped in, and he disappeared one day. I guess we all just assumed they had a job at a prison because they want to see us bad guys pay and had taken Rathmore away for their own fun.

I had no idea this entire time they’d treated his injuries and put him on the staff. This was before Serafina’s time, so she hadn’t heard the horrors of Magnus Rathmore.

“What kind of experiments was he doing?” she asked.

“Horrific ones. He was obsessed with creating a brand-new supernatural species. He wanted to take the best trait from each group and combine it into two people.
